1 January, 2026 - a year of intention! It started with a spontaneous trip to the Bunya Mountains with my 10 year old daughter to hike and photograph waterfalls, birds and nature. Covid stole my creativity..... Now that life is returning to normal again we've stopped talking about the things that Covid stole. We can once again leave the house. Travel is back on the cards. Time with people we missed is being made up for. The things we've lost are mostly being replaced now....(the people we've lost no). For me Covid stole my creativity.... Yes it stole the travel, special birthdays and anniversaries too. But it's left me in a haze. Like I'm looking through a closed blind at the world that's out there for me but can't reach. Losing your creativity..... is like losing your identity. It's strange and uncomfortable. I'm finally starting to rediscover who I am. But the journey is slow. And only time will show where it leads. SUNSETS & REFLECTIONS ---- Healing comes in stages. It's not an instant thing. It's not an easy thing. When we are in a state of healing, we need to find a happy place to process and reflect - for me that is in nature. There is something serene about watching the sunset on a beautiful location. Moments like this help us stop and reflect – even when not all reflections are happy ones. Moments like this help us find clarity and perspective. The day I shot this, I sat and cried long and hard. In silence. On my own. I needed to seek inner healing and peace. I needed to find a sense of reason. And I needed to put recent events into perspective. LESSON LEARNT & A WARNING FOR WOMEN WHO TRAVEL ---- Last night and today have been incredibly scary for me as a woman travelling alone. I'm away in Melbourne, heading overseas in 2 days, and my credit card was held at ransom by a man I'd just met. See last night at a local bar, I accidentally left my credit card sitting on the bar after paying for a drink and talking to a young man. We'd exchanged phone numbers earlier so his friends and mine stayed together. Yet little did I know that he had picked up my card and kept it. After that drink, I decided to go back to my hotel instead. He had taken it upon himself to make distinctive (and physical) moves on me and was obviously interested in wanting to accompany me back to my room. I was very uncomfortable. It wasn't until this morning that I realised my credit card was missing. So after no luck with the bar or my friends, I messaged him as a last resort. Lo and behold, he had it. After exchanging messages, he eventually agreed to meet locally to give it to me. But it came with a catch - "You can only have it if you stay with me tonight". Umm.....WTAF!! Thankfully I was with my brother today not far away. I embarrassingly told him the story and he agreed to take me to get it. We met at the rendezvous point. I went in alone and my brother watched on from nearby in protection mode. When the card was exchanged, he tried to go in for a kiss or a hug but I put up my hand and said "Please don't" and quickly backed away. I had no idea what this guy was capable of. We walked back to the car and locked the doors. I was shaking uncontrollably and highly emotional - I didn't realise how terrified I had actually been. This is yet another story of #metoo from my life and travels. It's a lesson that no book can teach you. And one that I've learnt the hard way. May this be a warning to women travelling alone..... be wary at all times. Some of my favorite things.... light, color, adventure and experience. Last night I visited one of my favorite bars in Melbourne yet... the Berlin Bar. I'd heard about this bar for the adventurous experience that it brought both in getting there and once inside. Safe to say that it didn't disappoint. This hidden bar is tucked away down Coors Lane in Melbourne's CBD and access is via a dark staircase to the second floor and a doorbell. I was asked to pick a side....East or West, capitalist or communist. I chose communist. They even had "Hunt For red October" playing. This week I'm in Melbourne exploring and photographing the culture and art this great city has to offer. Last night, I took a hidden bars walking tour with Kimmie from @walks101tours. We explored some of Melbourne's iconic laneways and visited a number of hidden bars throughout the city. And by hidden, I mean hidden.... access to one bar required a password, access to another involved stepping through a Narnia style old wardrobe and yet another required you to find a secret lever on a bookshelf that opened up a hidden door in the bookcase. It was very exciting and not only adventurous but the drinks were amazing too. If you're looking for something fun to do in Melbourne, I highly recommend you head on one of these walks! WINTER IS COMING.....errr ---- Winter is coming - no actually its already here. We had our coldest May day in Brisbane in 19 years yesterday - reaching 6oC (42oF) (ok so that's not THAT cold for those of you from cooler climates but when we have hot summers sitting at 38oC (100oF) its a shock to the system haha. So....how do you stay warm in the cold? I have no fat on me. Like I literally like a skin stuck to bones. So I get so cold so easily. THE DAY SOMEONE DIED ---- The day I photographed this mountain, someone died on it only hours later. Its a popular rock climbers mountain a couple of hours out of Brisbane and we'd attended this location for an early morning sunrise shoot. That morning we marveled at her majesty. As she rose from the clouds, as the sun illuminated her every feature.... proclaiming her presence on the Earth to anyone who wanted to acknowledge her beauty. Little did we know, that only hours later someone's life would be tragically cut short. That this majestic beauty would claim a life when their lifeline to her rocky form would fail. We listened to the rescue choppers and watched the emergency services personnel recover the fallen climber and for the rest of the day, a sense of sombreness was in the air around the campsite. IT NEVER RAINS, IT POURS ---- Life is a funny thing really. It's crazy how sometimes it doesn't just rain....it pours! One thing after another tearing you down and turning life into a chore. It's times like these that you either laugh or cry. As a mum of 4 running a very busy business, this feels like most of the time for me. There is ALWAYS something happening. And just when you think that's over, it's something else. This is me today. As yet another unexpected rain storm enters my radar. I've had so much of it lately that I've learnt to just laugh at the irony. Today, I choose to dance in the rain. To stick my tongue out and taste the droplets. ARE YOU WARY? #metoo ---- It's been 18 months since the #metoo movement hit social media and it's popularity has slowed down alot since its initial onslaught. Yet whilst the movement has slowed, the reality of living with #metoo certainly hasn't. The threat continues and I personally find myself still being wary of men on a regular basis. I had a brutal reminder of this on a recent overseas work trip where yet again I was faced with unwanted advances and had my personal boundaries forcibly (and physically) breached by a "friend" in the back of an uber. I'd forgotten about #metoo until then and I raise this now because a good male friend of mine regularly says "Me too....but not that me too" in chat. I laugh knowing that it’s his way of saying that he's not a threat. Truth be told, I've never considered him as one. Quite the opposite in fact...he was unknowingly there for me ‘that night’ as someone whom I felt safe with despite these "friends" pressuring me to "walk me back to my room". (I've never thanked him for that but maybe this post is a way of quietly doing so). It's sad though that #metoo was and continues to be an issue. And even sadder that my friend feels the need to clarify his words/behaviour because of those who cannot. I go away alone again in 2 weeks time. Will I be wary? Absolutely! Yet this will not stop me living my best life and I refuse to allow this social issue to hold me back from opportunity. I’ll be honest though, whilst I’m excited there is still that little twinge of worry and wariness about this trip as I again prepare to face yet another potential #metoo situation. IT DOESN’T MATTER IF NO ONE IS LISTENING ---- Have you ever done something, said something or written something and not cared about who is watching or listening? It’s liberating to feel free from others opinions, isn’t it. That is what this IG account is for me. I’ve only started telling people about it recently. It has been nice not knowing who any of you are. Those who have been told recently, were picked carefully...people who I felt comfortable to share with. Why? Because even though there are people out there who read my posts, in the end it doesn’t matter to me if no one is listening. The things that I share and will continue to share are personal ramblings of a deep thinker finding deeper meanings in the ebb and flow of daily life. My words, sparked by the things I’m experiencing, feeling, seeing or hearing. Whether you are listening or not, it doesn’t really matter. If you care or not, it doesn’t really matter. If my words are what you need to hear, or my voice makes you think deeper or reflect more….well that matters. THE BEST CAMERA IS THE ONE YOU HAVE WITH YOU! ---- Last night I attended a Nikon Australia pro event. Julia from Nikon reminded us of the saying "the best camera is the one you have with you". It is so true in so many ways because you can't always predict when something amazing will appear in front of you. And as long as you capture it, you are still creating art. What you want to do with it will then depend on the gear you have to use. I recently bought the Nikon Z6 and 24-70mm Z lens. After shooting with another brand for a number of years, this was my choice for a mirrorless camera. It performs amazing in low light, is lightweight and easy to take anywhere I go and has amazing features that are easy to use. So if you're looking for a great travel camera or wanting to change to a mirrorless system, I can highly recommend the Nikon Z6 or Z7. I love mine! KEEP CALM & WAIT FOR THE DECISIVE MOMENT ---- I know this location well. It is somewhere I frequent alot for other reasons. However, I've always enjoyed this structure. It's form. It's shapes. It's design. So one day, I was walking past with my camera and I decided to stop and admire it. With camera in hand, I thought "ah fk it, why not just take a photo". As I stood there and played with my composition, I found myself wishing there was a person in the photo. For 10 minutes I stood patiently and waited. I was about to give up when all of a sudden a figure appeared and boom I was scrambling to get my camera in position. I had all of about 3 seconds to get the shot. Once the lone figure walked into the spot I'd envisaged.....click, click, click....3 frames and they were gone. And just like that I had the shot. Good photography isn't just about being in the right place at the right time. Its about getting your settings right, composing your shot and patiently waiting for the DECISIVE MOMENT. Don't rush art.....be patient. In 2006, I traveled on my own to New Zealand. This trip came about after I walked away from a domestic violence relationship with nothing but the clothes on my back and my camera. For me, this trip had 1 aim……to test my personal limits, rediscover who I was and find my strength again. For 2 weeks I traveled through the South Island on my own. I hiked the glaciers in the toughest of conditions, got lost on eerie forest trails at dusk and pushed my resolve by running off mountains with a parasail and skiing down the highest peaks. It is the single most liberating thing I have ever done! I made one decision on that trip. That no man, no woman, no one person would ever steal my strength ever again. That I would never be controlled again. Treated like shit again. Or made to be anyone but myself again. The photos I took have become a permanent record of my journey of self-discovery. They still resonate strongly with me and have great power. Some depict gentle moments of reflection. Others (like this one) show the harshness of what I put myself through. #success THE GREATEST JOURNEY'S ARE THE MOST WORTH IT ---- I often get frustrated at how long and arduous a "journey" can be sometimes. As someone who likes to see things happen 'now' and 'yesterday', being patient and navigating the tough waters of an important journey drives me crazy! Yet today I finally saw something beautiful. I finally saw the place I’ve been travelling to. The last 6 months trying to instigate change (and reverse a ban on photography) in one of our major hospitals here hasn't been easy. In fact, it’s been fucking hard!! Harder than anyone truly knows. I've lost more sleep than I care to calculate, shed more tears than I wish to admit, bitten my tongue til it bled, stood strong in the face of hatred, and felt like giving up more times than I can count. Yet as I lay down my head to rest tonight, I am finally at peace. It’s not quite over yet but the calmer waters are ahead and the destination is in sight. I am the first to venture here. CHASING WATERFALLS ---- It's funny sometimes that life leads us in directions that we didn't think we would go. It can be scary and exciting all at the same time. Yet I strongly believe that people, opportunities and ideas come into our lives for a reason. When those people cross over with the ideas, which additionally cross over with opportunity, it’s a sign that maybe we need to take that tentative step into the abyss of the unknown and hope for the best! Today, I submitted a proposal to speak at an international convention with a topic that is often not discussed.....mental health. The topic "Chasing Waterfalls and Managing Mindset" came about after I began using this page to reflect on life as it sits for me right now. This page has become a place of safety and reflection.....a colleague of mine recently suggested that I submit a class on "chasing waterfalls" after seeing how this strategy has helped. At first we laughed about it, however the more I’ve thought about it the more the idea grew on me. And the more I realized that there was something in that, that was worth sharing. “Chasing Waterfalls” has been key to helping me maintain a good mindset lately. It’s helped me reconnect with nature, reconnect with my purpose in life and reconnect with my love of photography. WALK AWAY ---- I recently made the tough decision to walk away from a relationship that was no longer serving my heart in a positive way. It's been extremely upsetting and hard to let go of because of how close we had become. Yet recently it seems as though the connection I thought we had was most likely superficial. Brought together with similar interests and bonds….rather than a deep seated like for one another as I had thought. But for now I've stepped away and taken action to protect myself from being further exposed to hurt. It's been necessary and powerful for moving forward. I never realised though that in doing so I would feel like a kind of grief. A mourning for a relationship that had the potential to be something amazing. Now…. all that remains is a heavy heart and deep seated sadness and loss. I still think about this person often and I hold onto hope that one day our differences will be resolved and we will once again connect in a positive and beautiful way. Be the village for the ones going it alone! ---- Yesterday I caught up with 2 amazing Mum's who are currently out there going it alone. Both on their own by choice and both seeking a happier life for themselves and their children. Doing it this way is not easy however and it's times like this that we need to rally around our single parents and be their "village". One of them is a gorgeous young mum to a darling newborn baby boy (who I supported as a doula). We've connected so closely though that I’m visiting her weekly just to chat and be there for support. I have to say that I am so proud of how well she is getting on. The other is someone I haven't seen for a while that I randomly ran into at the shops. Just like so many of us, life has been chaotic and I have found myself digging around in my own bucket of craziness - I had no idea what she was going through. Yet somehow I feel like I need to spend more time with her. Do I have the time? Well let's be honest....no! But I have been through what she is going through and it was rough....real rough. No one should have to travel her path alone. But it brings me to an interesting place in my thoughts today.....I feel like we get so caught up in our own little bubbles sometimes that we forget to look past our own chaos and be there for other people. So despite the craziness of my diary the next week, I've made time to catch up with them both for a cuppa tea or a lunch date. It may only be a small gesture but it can make a big difference. “You do you boo, you do you!” ---- I had a bit of a laugh this week when someone posted this statement to me in a comment. It was aimed at me with daggers of nastiness and hatred, intended to pierce me and cause pain. However, what this person doesn’t realise is that I have a habit of turning negativity into something beautiful. So I took this statement in a completely opposite way to the way she intended. I am proud of who I am and what I aim for in life. What I stand up for and what I portray. We all have a path that we choose to walk in life. And the path that I have chosen is something I’m proud of. It might not have been easy. Or well trodden. But I like that about it. I am not the kind of person to stick to a path because its “safe”. I would rather beat my own way through the bush and break ground, smash taboos, open up discussions on issues that need to be raised….and simply be me. "Doing you” is what makes us Unique. Special. Spread rivers of LOVE, not seeds of HATE! ---- It's been an interesting couple of days in my household with a number of big events happening that had the potential to break me down, turn me inside out and send me to the looney bin. Thankfully I have a thick skin and the jabs have had little effect. Through it all though, the beautiful part has been having so many amazing people cover me with rivers of love, filling any cracks as they appeared and bringing love in place of hatred. The thing I find really disappointing about social media is the way that people can so quickly and willingly spread hate when there is no way that they would ever dare say such nasty things to your face. Even more, it achieves nothing. Dropping seeds of hate only breeds more hate and spreads pain and unhappiness for themselves, those around them and anyone who chances upon their comments. In a world full of so much hatred, be the person who spreads rivers of love on social media instead. The world is constantly changing. Every minute of everyday is different. The Earth is constantly moving. The weather is constantly changing. This week, I found myself pondering “fear”. Recently during my hike at Mt Glorious, I came across this gorgeous wild specimen of a carpet snake. This is a non-venomous Australian snake (yes we do have them lol) and I was NOT afraid of it. I saw it, I respected its space and then we spent an hour together. It kept moving in the direction it wanted to go and I just observed and photographed it. I have never been afraid of snakes. Or spiders. Or sharks even. Maybe that is because I’ve grown up in Australia (a country full of dangerous animals) or maybe it is because I have learnt to see past the fear and look at natures beautiful patterns and creations. I don’t know. But it led me to ponder fear. We are not born “afraid”. Fear is a learned emotion and for each of us it is different. It is ok to be afraid now and then. Fear is what keeps us from doing stupid things…..like jumping off a building because we think we can fly. But fear is not something to be afraid of!! If we can identify the reasons for our fear, we can identify ways to overcome it. What are you afraid of doing today? Why do you think that is? And what are you going to do to overcome it? How you do manage your mindset at times when everything is just overwhelming?! Maintaining a positive mindset is something I work incredibly hard on a daily basis. Looking at my life, its never been easy for me…..there always seems to be something! And right now, every day life just seems hard. Being a wife & mother, running a successful business & managing client expectations when they have no idea about all the other "stuff"…..it's exhausting and frustrating....and yet every day we get out of bed and we do the things we have to do. Today I went about work despite a bad headache, spent half the day doing washing after a child threw up all night, reported a business to Government authorities for malpractice, dealt with technical issues while working on client products, fielded yet ANOTHER message from a client demanding her products (who wasn’t even respectful enough to acknowledge my polite response) and tried to find 2 minutes in my day to eat a healthy lunch....and that was just today. People have no idea. They think they do. But they only see what we choose for people to see. People get so caught up their our own worlds that they become blinkered to what other people might be dealing with. Yet sometimes they need to just stop and think “ok maybe something else is going on, I'll be patient”. For me managing a positive mindset in the light of a difficult day/week/month involves burning my favorite calming oils, playing my favorite music and stepping outside to enjoy the sun (even for a moment while I collect the mail)….and simply giving myself some self-love. Because without me functioning properly, nothing else around me can function properly. At the moment I’m giving myself a lot of self-love. I have to. Because right now, life is hard. And if other people are unwilling to accept that…..fuck them. Your own mindset is more important. Be patient. Be kind. Show love..... especially to yourself! "Every cloud has a silver lining"?!?! What does that even mean? Finding the positive from the negative? Looking for the good things amongst the bad? You know this is something I actually decided to google (because as we all know, google has all the answers lol). According to google, we "use the term silver lining when you want to emphasize the hopeful side of a situation that might seem gloomy on the surface”. The common expression "every cloud has a silver lining" means that even the worst events or situations have some positive aspect." But man who else struggles to find the silver lining when the circumstances are “gloomy”? Am I the only one? Ok be honest. Today I missed a birth - an important photo shoot for myself and my client. (Just in case you missed that memo, I run a birth photography business @brisbanebirthphotography). It was through no fault of my own. Or theirs. It all just happened too fast. Yet I started to beat myself up over it as a result? Why? Because I tend to overanalyze EVERYTHING. Like literally EVERYTHING. It’s part of how I’m made up. I’ve done it for as long as I can remember. Yet I have had to develop strategies for how to manage it. Today I had to find the silver lining in a shitty situation. Ok so here goes. Firstly…..I still got gorgeous photos of my clients after the birth. Secondly….my clients are ok with how it all went down. And finally (and this is the clincher)…..no one died, the world didn’t come to an end and the sun will come up tomorrow. Tonight a friend of mine reminded me that “every day is the greatest day of your life”! Life is chaos, let's be honest. We don't ever sit long enough in the stillness of nature and just stop. Reflect. Enjoy the world around us. I'm THE WORST at this. As a mother of 4 children, running a very busy and successful business, I rarely find the time to just get away from the rat race and immerse myself in the beauty that surrounds us. Yet stopping and embracing life is one key to good mental health. Taking some deep breaths. Feeling the wind on our faces. Seeking solitude and silence can help to clear the body and the mind. This image for me is the epitome of serenity. When I look at it, I can almost feel the mist on my face, smell the soft scent of eucalyptus and hear the birds playing in the trees. It reminds me of a painting - an art piece that I want to put on my wall where I can go to simply stop and reflect, be it only for a moment. And this is what I love about photography..... Stop and take a moment to just breathe and enjoy being in the moment!! As I've been contemplating which things to share today, I sit in the comfort of my home air conditioning enjoying the cool relief that it brings. Yet while I'm lucky enough to be sitting here in comfort getting a much-needed rest from the Australian heat, going through photos is brings me a reminder of the bush battlers and farmers doing it tough on the land. This week we enter another Australian "heat wave", a constant reminder of the hot, sunburnt country that I live in. It's hot, it's dry, it's hard going and much of it is in drought much of the time. I'm lucky enough to live in the "big smoke" away from the hard yakka that our farmers do day in day out. So here’s a shout out to all the Australian farmers. Thank you for putting food on our tables. A DOCUMENTED LIFE ❤ For years, I've seen the world a little differently to those around me. It's this unique view on the world that drew me to pick up a camera and document the world through the lens. Since I first picked up my camera at the age of 12, I've always had a unique view of life. This weekend I presented at the Queensland Photographic Society's Gems of the Outback Conference in Emerald. It was an incredible event with great speakers and great company. On Saturday I also ran a workshop on newborn lifestyle photography with a mum of 5 and her darling boy Cash. This was one of the beautiful images created from the session. How cute are those toes.
